Ulcinj’s clifftop kalaja was once the most feared corsair port on the Adriatic — Cervantes himself was allegedly held for ransom here. Walk the ramparts and lanes with a local guide, from the old slave square and Balšić tower to the sea walls, as the call to prayer drifts over Mala Plaža below. Two easy hours on ramparts and lanes, timed for golden hour when the walls glow and the heat fades, with the citadel museum entrance included. Interesting history, but the walking pace was slower than I'd like. The fortress views over the bay were breathtaking and the pace let us take photos. Our guide brought the old town's history to life with stories you won't find in a guidebook.
