Sunset Tasting Menu on the Perast Waterfront

Perast grew rich on seafaring under Venetian rule, and its captains' palaces and bell towers still line the water, facing two small islands in the Bay of Kotor. This five-course meal is served at a waterfront table in the town, so the evening passes beside the bay as the light fades.

How the evening runs

The evening opens with a welcome drink, then moves through a five-course tasting menu of Montenegrin cooking, with four glasses of wine paired along the way. Coffee and petit fours close the meal. Cooking on the bay has long mixed Adriatic fish and olive oil with Venetian habits, and Perast even has its own almond cake, the Peraška torta. The menu itself is set by the kitchen, so if anyone in your party has allergies or dietary needs, raise them with the host when you enquire.

What you'll see

Across the water lie Perast's two islands. St George is natural, its Benedictine abbey ringed by cypresses. Our Lady of the Rocks was built up on a reef, by tradition stone by stone after sailors found an icon of the Virgin there in the fifteenth century, and each July the town still rows out for the fašinada, dropping stones around the island. As the sun goes down, the light slides off the mountains and the lamps come on along the shore.

Good to know

Transport is not included, and Perast's narrow waterfront is a place to walk rather than drive, so plan how you will get there and back. Drinks beyond the welcome drink and the pairing are charged separately. One booking covers up to eight guests, which suits a couple, a group of friends or a small celebration.
