About Morača Monastery

Founded in 1252 on a terrace above the Morača river, this is one of the most important medieval Orthodox monuments in Montenegro — and the natural stop on the drive between Podgorica and the mountains.

Morača Monastery was founded in 1252 by Stefan Vukanović Nemanjić, a prince of the Nemanjić dynasty, where the Morača canyon briefly widens into a green terrace. Its main church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, is a solid single-nave Raška-style building whose interior holds work from several centuries: fragments of the original 13th-century painting survive alongside a celebrated cycle of the prophet Elijah, and a major 16th- and 17th-century repainting carried out after the monastery was abandoned and stripped under Ottoman pressure. The complex — church, small chapel, cells and gardens inside a low wall — is still active, and because it sits directly on the main road north it is the one piece of medieval Montenegro most visitors actually see.

What survives, and what was lost

Morača’s history is a cycle of damage and repair. The monastery was plundered in the late 16th century and its lead roof stripped, after which it stood abandoned long enough for weather to destroy much of the original interior. Restoration in the 1570s brought new painters, and further campaigns followed in the 17th century, so the walls now read as layers rather than a single scheme. The Elijah cycle — the prophet fed by ravens, the ascent in the fiery chariot — is the work art historians travel for.

The canyon around it

The Morača canyon is the corridor between Podgorica and the northern mountains, and the drive is a large part of the appeal: the road clings to the rock, tunnels through spurs and crosses the river repeatedly. Pull-offs give views down to the water, and in spring the flow is strong with snowmelt. Continuing north the road climbs to Kolašin and on toward Biogradska Gora, making the monastery a natural first stop on a day heading into the mountains.
