Pljevlja spreads across a high plateau in Montenegro’s far north, close to the borders with Serbia and Bosnia and long a crossroads of the region’s trade and faiths. It is one of the country’s oldest continuously settled places — the Romans built the town of Municipium S. here — and its two great monuments reflect that layered history. The Serbian Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Trinity, founded in the 16th century, holds some of the richest frescoes and one of the most important manuscript and treasury collections in Montenegro. A short walk away, the Husein-paša Mosque of 1569 is considered one of the finest Ottoman mosques in the Balkans, its 42-metre minaret among the tallest in the region. Modern Pljevlja is a working town shaped by coal mining and a thermal power station, so it sees few tourists — part of its unvarnished appeal. Pljevlja’s standing as a historic trading town is written into its two great monuments. The Monastery of the Holy Trinity, just outside the centre, was founded in the 16th century and is celebrated for its wall paintings, carved iconostasis and a treasury of manuscripts, printed books and liturgical silver — one of the most valuable collections in the country. In the town itself, the Husein-paša Mosque of 1569 is regarded as one of the most beautiful Ottoman mosques in the Balkans; its slender 42-metre minaret and decorated interior repay the trip on their own.

Roman roots and mountain cooking

Long before either, the Romans ran a town here — Municipium S. — whose excavated remains and finds, including fine glass and mosaics, appear in the local heritage museum. Pljevlja’s cool upland climate also gives it a distinctive table: Pljevaljski sir, a crumbly salted cow’s-milk cheese, is prized across Montenegro, and northern staples like heljdopita (buckwheat pie) and slow-cooked lamb suit the mountain air. This is hearty, unfussy food eaten where it is made.

Gateway to the north

Set among the northern mountains near the Tara River, Pljevlja works best as part of a wider northern loop rather than a destination in isolation. The Tara Canyon and the Đurđevića Tara bridge are within reach to the south, the Durmitor National Park and Žabljak beyond them, and the road on toward Serbia passes more of the region’s monasteries. Self-driving is by far the easiest way to string these together.
